Key Match your Mixes: Video DJing Tutorial 3/5
by How To DJ on Jul.03, 2009, under DJ Books, DJ Software, DJ Tips, DJ Tricks, DJ Tutorials, DJ Videos, DJing Basics, How To DJ
Here’s the third video in Andy Touchfingers’ Mixed in Key video tutorial series for djs. Andy demonstrates in this video how to listen to tracks for differen sections, many of which have different keys (much like an entirely different song within the main song). He also continues to show us how to match keys of tracks using software.
“Some kinds of music are very logged in to one tonal center” explains Andy. Many different genres have different song structures, and some have more movement in tone. He also tells us how music with a lot of effects and strange noise are difficult to key, simply because of the strange nature of the sounds!
Andy also explains how the Circle of Fifths works, which is very valuable to know in order to understand how different keys go with each other.

Mixed in Key: Video DJing Tutorial Part 1 of 5
by How To DJ on Jul.03, 2009, under DJ Downloads, DJ Equipment, DJ Tutorials, DJ Videos
Thanks to Andy Touch Fingers from www.learnhowtodj.com for the great tutorial series.
Summary
This 2nd video in our 5 part djing tutorial video series is an overview of what keyed mixing is and how you can begin starting to create sets that are mixed in key.
Andy goes over why keyed mixing sounds good, why it is important, the different keys and structures of songs that make them easier or harder to mix together in a musically sound, keyed dj blend. Different genres and different tracks mixed together will compliment each other more when mixed in key. When you match the tonal centers of two tracks, their individual parts may combine within a mix to create more energy and a greater listening experience: the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

Free DJ Contracts Templates, Examples & Downloads
by How To DJ on May.25, 2009, under DJ Books, DJ Tips, DJ Tutorials, DJ eBooks, How To DJ, dj contracts
What’s in a typical DJ contract? Well, to understand what is in a dj contract we need to first understand what DJ contracts are any why they are necessary.
A contract is defined as:
” an exchange of promises between two or more parties to do, or refrain from doing, an act, which resulting contract is enforceable in a court of law.”
(source)
Basically, a contract is an agreement that is enforceable in the courtrooms… so, if anyone breaks the rules outlined in the contract, they can be held liable for not living up to their end of the bargain.
Whatever you’re doing, it is best practice to work with a contract. On the lower end of the scale, contracts may not make sense. When there is a larger monetary investment involved, it is very important to ensure that both parties get their agreement in writing so that everyone knows what to expect, and also to ensure that both parties get a fair deal and to make sure that no one gets ripped off.
What is in a DJ Contract?
DJs and booking agents may require certain things to be outlined in a contract, including:
- Payment Terms
- Fees
- Room, Board, and Transportation details
- Equipment Requirements
- Date of Event/Time Slot Confirmation
- Artist Riders
- Any Additional Requirements
- Terms that breach the contract
Clubs, Event Organizers, and Promoters can require certain things from the artists as well:
- Confirmation of date
- DJs obligation to perform
- Use of Artist in promotional materials
- Additional requirements and assurances
- Terms that will breach the contract
Usually the venue/promoters cannot do anything if the DJ plays terrible, misses the gig due to illness or travel complications. Most DJs / agencies will require a portion of the money upfront, in order to hedge against playing then never getting paid.
Whether you are a DJ or a promoter, do not be intimidated by contracts. Contracts between DJs and event organizers are not meant to intimidate or deter anyone from working together.. they are simply a form of agreement to ensure that everyone gets what they ask for.
NOTE: If you need full DJ Contracts and more detailed information on how to draw up any type of DJ Contract, we recommend purchasing Danny Rampling’s eBook, which covers DJ Contracts in full detail, and includes samples and templates you can use to draw up your own DJ contracts. It’s only about $30, and will definitely save you from the pain and suffering of writing out your own contracts. Click here for purchase info.

Success is something that most of us strive for as with happiness, but along these same roads there are choices which may lead us to failure or Sadness. ‘Hi Danny,
I have been DJing for nearly 15yrs and before that and during I have always been a professional musician. (A Drummer to be precise). I just happened to be online buying some tunes when I saw your ad for your book on how to DJ. I kind of bought on a whim thinking it might be cool to see another DJs angle on things. Little did I know I’d be in for a LIFE CHANGING experience. Thoughts Ideas and attitude of this book go far beyond the realms of DJing and was the catalyst for the change that’s going on in my life right now. Sorry if that sounds dramatic but that is how it is. Thanks Danny all the best and best of luck with everything’
Ian Jones “KILLMeDJ”

‘Hi Danny,
I was able to read How To DJ Properly book and have to say that your is even better. More info, more knowledge. I am dj for about 6 years in my opinion it is always time to update even basic infos. I like to read such things.
- dj spoon aka OneManArmy’ (POLAND)
‘Hi Danny,
When i started in 2000 I had literally no clue what I was doing. Mobile DJing was a bit of fun on the side, it wasn’t until I got ahold of the internet and discovered all these other DJs doing things I could only dream of. My first impressions of DJing came from Tiesto and Arman Van Burren. Seeing them play to thousands was life changing.Whilst i was happy entertaining weddings and birthdays, there was always a drive to do better. So in the forth-coming years I spent every minute I could trying to borrow a friends internet, goto the local library, etc just to get more information, to learn what others knew. After many set backs and many achievements (a festival and traveling overseas to play in China) I’ve now come to an impasse. No jobs going, and all the residencies locked down by other DJs, made life here quiet hard to live.
But after stumbling across this ebook (and with others like The Secret) I have started to train my habits, thoughts, and actions to be better, to learn more and grow with every day. The words from Danny in the ebook towards the end are quite literally moving, heart-felt and sincere. You can appreciate that the man has been-there-done-that, and he’s just spreading the wealth of knowledge he has.
Truly now is the best time to start becoming a DJ or even to re-hash on the talents you might always have. This book will definatley open your eyes a bit wider and maybe even introduce you to ideas you hadn’t even thought of yet. I look forward to the updates and highly suggest that you invest in your future. “Money is nothing when you trade it for the wealth of knowledge”.
Cheers Danny, Luke Langley aka. Luke Electrik (AUSTRALIA)
