I was in the same boat except my dad was a Dj and I got handed down all his DJing stuff… But it was kinda old so I did a lot of updating of the equipment…
First off You need to be commited to doing it because it costs a lot of money to get started but it pays for itself by making up to 600-700 dollars a weekend…
Next you need to decide what you need to get… First off decide on CD players if thats the route you want to go (Or you can computerize everything but I find that a DJ should use CD’s and a CD player not just make playlists on a computer) A CD player should be reliable and have a anti skip feature on it. Sometimes you have to play on week floors and even the slightest vibration can skip a CD player without anti skip…
Next you need an amp. You need an amp big enough to push out enough sound to fill the rooms you will play in… The bigger the rooms the bigger amp you want to get.
Next is the mixer… The mixer lets you tune your CD’s players to sound the best and it also lets you switch between sounds without a pause in between songs.
Lastly you need speakers… Pry the most important part, you need speakers that are good and can push out a lot of sound without much feedback… Speakers make the Dj…
Then if you want lights you can choose what route you want to go there weither its DMX lights (expensive) or just plug and go lights (Cheap but still very good… pry best for you if you want to do school dances and stuff)
I would go to http://www.guitarcenter.com and go to the Dj and lighting section and that will give you an idea of the stuff u need and the price… You will pry be looking at a starting price of 2000-2500 dollars to get started but you can go without a lot of lights to get started and only spend about 1500 bucks…
Hope this helps man and good luck, its a lot of fun being a DJ and very good money too…
